....Dr. Cowpland made a little more of an effort to focus his address on the advertised topic: his vision of a market that combines the open-source model with the profitability demands of a public company.

He did congratulate the Linux community on its "coming-out party" and tout some well-known facts and stats about the growth of the Linux operating system and the conversion of Microsoft users to Linux.

But Mr. Cowpland also used the talk as a drawn-out advertisement, starting with a giant video display of Corel flags and balloons, intermingled with sports heroes, and moving on to a demo of Corel's latest offerings.

Corel claims to be the first commercial software and hardware vendor to recognize the potential of open source. Its WordPerfect 2000 suite on Linux has been available since late last year and has been downloaded from the Internet more than 600,000 times.

Dr. Cowpland said that Corel would distribute Linux through Corel DesktopLinux to simplify the use of Linux for the mainstream....

Department of Foreign Affairs and International Trade to Use Corel(r) WordPerfect(r) Suite 8 Worldwide

Plans are to install software in embassies and consulates in 132 countries

OTTAWA, ONTARIO--Corel Corporation is pleased to announce that the Canadian Department of Foreign Affairs and International Trade has purchased 6,800 maintenance licences for Corel(r) WordPerfect(r) Suite 8.

The department plans to install Corel WordPerfect Suite 8 in embassies and consulates in 132 countries around the world, and at its head office in Ottawa.

The department said that Corel WordPerfect Suite 8 was the best tool in terms of compatibility and ease of use. The outstanding compatibility features allow it to communicate with employees and contacts situated around the world.

Customers can obtain legal certificates at a special price

OTTAWA, ONTARIO--Corel Corporation is pleased to announce a WordPerfect(r) Amnesty program for customers who are running historical versions of WordPerfect without valid proof of licence.

Under the Corel Licence Program - CLP Choice(tm) WordPerfect Amnesty campaign, customers can obtain legal certificates for their current software from Corel for a suggested list price of US $29(1). The Amnesty program will cover several historical versions of WordPerfect. For details on product offering, please contact your local retailer.

''This program will allow customers who do not have legal certificates to obtain one for their records and enjoy the full benefits of Corel's support services such as Corel Tech Services and the Corel Solution Partners Program,'' said Jim Orban, Corel's executive vice president of marketing. ''With legal certificates, these customers will also have a legal base to upgrade into Corel's latest technology.''
