It is very possible that the rock is not a Gabbro but it does not matter. The host for the Frood, the world's richest nickel mine is a quartz diorite. The norite in sudbury is never a host. The reason the mines are all near mafics is that they are where the vent was. The vent systems were plugged with all kinds of extruding "sills" of volcanic gabbroic material. In fact they are coarse sea bed basalts. Very coarse flows are now known to be common. Later the area was placidly covered with sediments. You know that was the next event as the sediments and covering volcanics are not a disconformity.

F. Puskas first solit the core and logged it. He is with Novawest and was with Inco.
