The only thing Catholicism ever awakened in me, as a child, was an intense awareness of all the better things there were to do on a Sunday morning.

Invocation of guilt is, I suspect, more a function of maternity than of religion. And the experience of being punished for sins one didn't commit may be responsible for the continued popularity of disciplinary activities, even among those who have never been religious.

Shaw wrote some brilliant stuff on Puritans and fun in The Devil's Disciple. I shall have to look it up.
