Sony,Toshiba to brief on PlayStation chip 0700 GMT

TOKYO, March 4 (Reuters) - Sony Corp said on Thursday that it, Toshiba Corp and Sony Computer
Entertainment Inc would hold a joint news conference at 4 p.m. (0700 GMT) on chips to be used in a new
PlayStation game machine.

The news conference will be attended by Sony President Nobuyuki Idei and Toshiba President Taizo
Nishimuro, Sony said in a statement.

Jiji news agency reported on Tuesday that Sony and Toshiba would jointly set up production facility for the
chips. Investments are expected to be nearly 100 billion yen, it said.

Spokesmen for both Sony and Toshiba declined to comment on the report.

On Tuesday, Sony unveiled a new 128-bit microprocessor which will provides the PlayStation with a high
capacity to manipulate digital information, allowing for more realistic graphics.

The new PlayStation will be launched in Japan in next winter, Sony Computer Entertainment, a Sony unit,
said on Tuesday.

Development costs for the 128-bit microprocessor and a graphic chip to be used in the next-generation
PlayStation totalled about 20 billion yen, Sony officials said.

Sony also said the new microprocessor will use Direct Rambus DRAM chips developed by Rambus Inc .

The Nihon Keizai Shimbun business daily reported in its evening edition on Thursday that Toshiba and
Sony would set up a joint venture as early as next month to produce system LSI (large scale integration)
chips, mainly microprocessors for the new PlayStation.

Toshiba was expected to own a majority stake in the joint venture, with Sony Computer Entertainment
holding the rest, the report said

Notice Toshiba as a partner, remember Toshiba is going to make the RDRAM chip (I think I got that right), the investment is in "DRAM"....Yes, IMO, Sony is getting ready to jump into RDRAM in a big way...

This investment is not just coincidental with this weeks PSII news...
