As a marketing man myself, I can tell you that the Marlboro Man is a Classic Case study in Branding by Image. Strong branding is a matter of Time, Money and that intangible factor which some brands have and others don't.

It does cost money to establish Brand... but once you have it, it becomes a force in itself. Look at Intel.
