Nothing like maintaining a low profile to avoid terrorist attention.

The field terminals contain last point distribution electronics. The neighborhood node. In telco terms, it's the pedestal hardware that is designed to hang off SONET distribution rings, for the hand off of individual feeds to residences or other structures. These may contain DSLAMs, or other GR-303 compliant digital loop carrier elements.

I would suggest that we await WTC's fuller description of your "Things." Five feet off the ground, seems extremely vulnerable to me. But I suppose these are the pedestals, but HDSL is inconsistent with the installer's earlier statement of VDSL going in.
