G'day all - re: the Fool's article. Yes, there was some hedging here and there, but essentially it was arguing that TWMC didn't go with the web-centric approach enmasse. So, the spin is certainly negative. However, IMHO, it certainly didn't present TWMC objectively. To begin with, costwise, from the consumer pov, there is not a whole lot of difference, since, correct me if I am wrong, the net guys always hit the purchasers a handling fee. To think that consumer getting a break is erroneous. Rather, the net guys got a better spread by not paying royalty to the record cos. But more important, CD can be impulse buying. And, AFAIK, so long as teenagers of america are still going to the malls, they will buy from the Strawberries and the Coconuts. As a matter of opinion, it would be truly sad to see the net turn the world into a bunch of recluse. Selling to the same customer base is not true either. It is not necessarily cannibalism. The net does allow shopping in dire weather and we have heard all the retailers' problem of impeding sale due to severe weather. So, it is a customer retaining strategy.

Now, after blowing TWMC horn, fair be fair. The brick and mortar advertisement strategy is good only for domestic sale where TWMC has a presence. So, in this respect, the net guys will win hand down. So, while I actually agree with Mr Higgins's low budget approach, it is worth the while to have selective advertisement compaign on the net. Right now, everyone knows it is a negative return to advertise on AOL, but not regional ISPes.
