Technology Stocks : EMC How high can it go? -- Ignore unavailable to you. Want to Upgrade?

Dear Claude: I suspect the agreement will have something to do with Storage. Dell probably wants to get into the storage business through IBM. But, I remind you, EMC beat the pants off of IBM, I fail to see how anything would change. In my opinion, this could be a very costly mistake for DELL. JDN

Claude and JDN,

I also thought EMC would take a hit this am from the IBM-Dell announcement. You can't tell a lot from the announcement yet, however,

Under the deal, Dell will buy a range of personal computer components including high
capacity data storage, computer chips, network gear and personal computer monitors

Will the storage part include high capacity, highly scalable storage boxes (Terabytes) that EMC excels in, or is the storage agreement "just" for individual hard drives for PCs and servers? I'm guessing definitely the latter, plus smaller versions of the former, i.e., external storage for servers. However, IMO, EMC should maintain their IP advantage in their multi-OS platform compatibility, state of the art RAS (reliability, availability and serviceability) and proprietary software, all of which make their RAID products the leader.

To JDN, please don't ever sell IBM technology short, however. Nobody is better, still, when it comes to semiconductor and storage media development. The one way you can get screwed by them, though, is in price. They don't come cheap.

Anyway, has the street figured this one out yet, EMC +2 3/4?

Tony

I can't imagine a $50 billion market for storage not inviting strong competition. Dell, IBM, etc. are not planning to let EMC have free reign. There will be competition, and IMO, there will be a decrease in the long run of EMC's market share and profit margins, but so what?

This is one fat and growing storage pie, and EMC is still the gorilla, and profits will still increase. In fact, I just bought some for my son.

good investing -- fred
