These are subtle forms of price fixing/stabilization. Too fat guys decorating each other to screw the competition. DELL has realized that it can't grow defying gravity for ever. Fat IBM that took such a beating three/four years ago and is on a turnaround now, could use some of DELL's 30+ % growth in form of product purchase promise. Two rich families marrying into each other, has happened so many times before. If CPQ doesn't get its act together, they could get squeezed!
When they bought the shitty Digital few months ago, they diversified for sure. They cleaned house and reorganized. Now they have to show profit and sale growth and several new hit products. Otherwise DELL/IBM deal could pressurize them, since IBM is sharing patents etc. with DELL. CPQ wised up by spinning of Altavista. They better cut the fat out, quick and show sales and profit growth. Otherwise they will be distant fourth or fifth!
