EMC yesterday launched its new enterprise storage network (ESN) products in the UK, and predicted it would see $10 billion worldwide revenue by 2001. EMC CEO Michael Ruettgers also said EMC planned 40 per cent European growth.

Commenting on the above, IDC analyst Klaus Eger, said the market was moving toward SAN, but that today's products were not as revolutionary as EMC was claiming. He added: "EMC's prediction of $10 billion revenue is reasonable. Regarding software, it has been taking market opportunity away from IBM, but the SAN market it still difficult to predict"

Neil, Any way you can stratify these numbers into more distinct market segments, eg. high end vs low end storage?? In other words, I'm not so sure that these relative sales/SOM numbers reflect which vendors are going to be the largest SAN vendors. I believe that the SAN is targeted primarily to high end storage market. For instance, I have heard thru the grapevine that HDS is actually the second largest storage vendor in the world ( high end market, whatever that means ).
