Dell had so much money and cash flow-they had to do something with it. Perhaps they won't get that much for the $16 Billiond. Guy from Dell keeps saying it will be a much bigger deal than $16 B

John, re:<< ...but it looks like Dell is getting to use IBM's R&D department (without having to create their own) in some key areas.....>> I don't think this is part of the deal. Its my understanding that this is really a extension of an existing OEM agreement between the two companies. Dell will get to use IBM's latest technology, such as semi's using copper interconnect vs. Aluminum. Another example is Dell will purchase IBM's high end disk drives, this will hurt Seagate. So, I don't really think this 16B agreement is really much more than a very big OEM supplier agreement. I didn't see anything in the announcement about the two companies sharing R&D resources.

Of course, there maybe future announcements forthcoming. For example, IBM may abandon their PC manufacturing in favor of having Dell manufacture PC's for them. Just my guess.

Its IBM's stock's that really benefiting from the deal...I think Dell's shares are just going alone with IBM. The next few days will tell the story on how strong Dell's stock really is.
