The microphones made it nearly impossible to hear the questions, and most were not repeated, however one response seemed to be addressing a question about IBM having trouble with its PC business. The predictable response was that IBM's PC business is improving and this should not be interpreted as implying anything about it. Nothing was said directly about firmness of orders that I heard. It is clear to me that IBM realizes it has a strategic asset in its technology and component business that is best served by selling through every available channel, including IBM systems divisions, Dell, HP etc. Dell may get special treatment because they are the leading and fastest growing sales channel. Some true blue customers will continue to want to buy everything from PCs to Mainframes from a single source, so IBM is not likely to exit the PC business entirely in the near future. This deal could eventually give Dell entry into a lot of IBM accounts that they have been locked out of, by giving an IBM blessing to the technology in Dell systems, similar to the Intel Inside blessing.
