PC Week Internet Economy Study Finds Companies Stampeding into the Web Space [Interesting, but not altogether useful. --Duker] Study Also Shows That MIS/IS/IT Departments are Most Likely to Own Budget And Control Implementation of Their Company's E-Business System MEDFORD, Mass., March 4 /PRNewswire/ -- PC Week, the nation's IT newsweekly published by Ziff-Davis (NYSE: ZD - news), today announced the results of the first PC Week Internet Economy Survey. The survey found that companies are stampeding into the Web space. Peter Longo, Vice President and Publisher of PC Week, said, ''Our first Internet Economy Survey discovered that 84% of our subscribers currently conduct electronic business, while the other 16% plan to do so in the next 24 months. What's going on is a corporate rush to build .com companies far faster and far more extensively than anyone predicted.'' The PC Week Internet Economy Survey found that average sales or the gross revenues generated from Internet-based e-business on an annual basis is $3.7 million. This currently represents 25% of the average company's current total sales volume and is expected to generate 29% of its total sales volume in the next 12 months. Of those respondents who currently have e-business systems, 39% have seen a measured increase in their company's return on investment from the Internet-based electronic business. Among this same group, 23% have seen increased profit from sales generated through their Internet-based electronic business compared to sales conducted via retail or other channels. The survey found that MIS/IS/IT departments are most likely to own their company's e-business budget and to control the implementation of their company's e-business system. It also found that 67% of the respondents think their Internet-based electronic business strategy is extremely or very important to the future of their company. The study was conducted by The Strategy Group, an independent market research company located in Venice, FL. The results are based on telephone interviews with 300 PC Week subscribers who currently have or plan to implement an electronic business system to conduct business via online services, corporate extranets, intranets or the public Internet. All 300 respondents are involved in purchasing these e-business systems. Marketers or agencies interested in seeing a presentation on the full study should contact their local PC Week sales representative or call Charles Lee at 415-547-8108.
