Ramsey, Compaq and HWP are already loading Linux into workstations and servers, as are IBM and Dell. I don't see where this alliance gives IBM and Dell any advantage with a free, open OS. Yes, using Linux would cut the cost, but where is the rest of the software going to come from? I think some will be developed, again, open to all competitors. So, I don't see this as an advantage to either firm or a big disadvantage to other players. At the high end, Compaq is number one in many areas and HWP is gaining market share. Dell is doing ok, while IBM is losing share across the board. This year, a new Hitachi high end server is likely to chop IBM's share even more. So, they are desperate to keep those hardware revenues from falling like a rock every quarter.

<<This alliance should hurt their competitors, the only question is how much. Other than HWP, everything else is up. >>

My explanation is that this is just a short-term tech. rebounce. Tomorrow's employment number will have a much bigger impact for the market goes one way or another. And IBM and Dell is up for different reason. IBM got a deal. Dell will split next Monday. I read from Dell thread, quite a few dell head said they will sell half of their position after split. So the trend for Dell is down. Split will not stop it.

<<Is the street thinking that this alliance would be good for GTW, SUNW, MSFT, CPQ?>>

So far, most analyses I've seen have focused on the issue of whether DELL can execute the plan without beefing up their services ability dramatically. If they have to go outside for those services, then the highest margin business is adversely affected.

Interesting to see what transpires.
