Time to ask if they can ship without formal approval. This hurts.

The press release from Cablelabs tells a partial story and consequently is terribly misleading. CMTO has been scheduled to go into the March round for 3300 certification and entered the just-released round to learn what they could in advance. Even so, they did so well it was thought for a time they might actually be certified on the 3220. This would have given them DOCSIS certification on a chip that wasn't their focus. Most of their customers want the 3300.

Cablelabs is anxious to certify retail products and CMTO's aren't. I asked the company if they could sell their products in advance of being certified and was told, yes, definitely.

Thomson and Toshiba, the two companies receiving DOCSIS certification in this round, are not big competitors.

I asked if the analysts following the company understand the current situation and, again, was told, yes. In fact, CSFB and Dain Rauscher Wessels both have full reports that would be worth reading if anyone has access.

The 3300 chips enable voice and tiered services and will be tested beginning March 15 with results out some time in early April.

At any rate, I'm relieved today's drop is a phantom event. Time to add. . .
