S&P Reiterates Buy Recommendations on Dell, IBM

NEW YORK, Mar. 04 (Standard & Poor's) - S&P reiterated its (buy) recommendations on shares of Dell Computer Corp (DELL) and International Business Machines (IBM) after the companies announced a $16 billion, seven-year technology pact.

Analyst Megan Graham-Hackett says the deal is a strategic plus for both. She notes that DELL will buy PC components like disk drives, chips, and displays from IBM. She says IBM's strong research and development efforts have led to technological advantages in each of these components and will support DELL's differentiation as a maker of leading-edge PCs and its push into higher-end systems. Meanwhile, she says, the added sales outlet means IBM gets better returns from its R&D investments by spreading those costs over a larger sales base.

Graham-Hackett plans an update on the situation following the companies' conference call.
