>>I would have to say that the author does not know what he is talking about.<<

Huh. That was an alternative I hadn't considered. He seemed kinda smart. Can't argue with your numbers, though.

<< that means they began the design process in January,1988 >>

If you meant January 1998, the answer is.....> they started K7 project well before that, me thinks.

Scumbria, < to say that the author does not know what he is talking about.> I totally agree. Plus the whole thing
looks like a low-quality journalism: the kid
definitely mixes up what he thinks (and what he has
heard so far from other kid's stories) with what
Mr. Weber actually said in the lecture.

How long would you say the K7 would likely have taken to first silicon?

I am familiar with a VLIW processor, not x86 or close, that has taken two years so far and even though they have had silicon, it is not really first silicon on the completeness of what I suspect they had hast June for the K7. Thus for this 170 sq.mm chip it will likely be two and one half years for a first complete .25 micron part to be built. Partial feature chips were built after 18 months. Radical archictecture parts such as this may take more time because of the non conventional aspects to the design, or less, I do not know.

What you you think Scumbria for an modern competetive X86 design, such as the K8. How long should it take them to design it?
