ONEWORLD SYSTEMS INTRODUCES INTEGRATED, EXPANDABLE COMMUNICATIONS SERVERS FOR SMALL AND MEDIUM OFFICE MARKETS
New family of servers combines Internet access and routing, remote access, and fax capabilities
SUNNYVALE, Calif., -- June 8, 1998 -- OneWorld Systems, representing the new business direction of Global Village Communication, Inc. (NASDAQ: GVIL), today announced a new family of communications servers that combines Internet access and routing, remote access, online service access, and fax capabilities all in integrated, versatile and expandable products for small and medium size office. Designed for the small and medium size office, OneWorld 5000 communications servers are easy-to-use, can be expanded as an office grows, integrate multiple functions that can all be managed with a single, graphical administration software application, and lower phone costs by dynamically sharing phone lines among multiple data communications uses. The OneWorld 5000 family includes the OneWorld 5000 Fax Server, the OneWorld 5000 Remote Access Server and the OneWorld 5000 Suite Server. All products are expected to ship throughout North America in July 1998. The OneWorld 5000 communications servers will be sold through Value-Added Resellers (VARs) and are expected to have U.S. estimated street prices starting as low as $2,495.00 depending on the model and configuration. "This is the first time that sophisticated data communications products have been designed specifically for the small and medium size office, with both the user and network administrator in mind," said Neil Selvin, President and Chief Executive Officer of Global Village Communication, speaking about the new OneWorld Systems direction. "Unlike any other product on the market today, OneWorld 5000 communications servers integrate multiple communications technologies into a single product and provide a user interface that is easy for employees to use, and office managers and network administrators to manage, all at a price that won't break the budget. With over 13,000 installed OneWorld 100 Macintosh products as the beginning of our experience with communication servers, our new OneWorld 5000 family now provides both Windows and Macintosh customers with a rich user experience and exemplifies our approach to making complex data communications easy for the people who actually use it!" said Selvin.
OneWorld 5000 Family The OneWorld 5000 family of communications servers are an entirely new architecture. They operate in a Windows NT or Novell NetWare environment and are accessible by any Windows or Macintosh client connected to that network. Installation for all models is guided by a Wizard-based application that takes the VAR or network administrator step-by-step through the installation process. Updating users' profiles, privileges and the management of the OneWorld 5000 family is also designed to be easy using the OneWorld 5000 Administrator software application that is included with the products. To help growing businesses expand their communications capabilities when they need to, all product models can be upgraded from 4 to 34 ports per server cost effectively in the field. For requirements beyond 34 ports, multiple OneWorld 5000 servers can be stacked and managed from a single administration program. All OneWorld 5000 Servers include Network Modem capabilities for dial-out Internet access for all users on the network. System administrators can manage Internet usage by determining who has access, how many people have access at once, and how long they have access. Standard analog phone lines can be used with the servers' internal V.90 56K modems for high-speed access to the Internet. Through a proprietary technology called "dynamic port allocation," each model can share phone lines among multiple services on the fly. The OneWorld 5000 Suite version, for example, can dynamically share phone lines among Remote Access, Internet Routing, Send Fax, Receive Fax and Network Modem services without any user intervention. Services can also be individually configured on a port by port basis. Shared services provide for more efficient utilization of each phone line resulting in the need for fewer phone lines and significantly reduced monthly phone line costs.
OneWorld 5000 Fax Server The OneWorld 5000 Fax Server is a networked client/server solution that connects to a company's local area network and gives employees access to a company-wide centralized fax server. Fax is the most prevalent method of electronic business communication today, but frequently not the most efficiently implemented. The OneWorld 5000 Fax Server increases productivity and enhances communication by combining sophisticated fax server hardware and award-winning client software that allows employees to send and receive faxes from their desktop computers as easily as they send and receive email. By using a fax server, the typical steps of printing a document, feeding it into a fax machine and then waiting for the fax to be sent are eliminated. Whether employees are in the office or accessing the network remotely, the OneWorld 5000 Fax Server lets them send and receive faxes directly from their computer. Award-winning FaxWorks fax software for Windows users and GlobalFax fax software for Macintosh users allow employees to compose fax documents on their computer using standard desktop applications. A fax print driver is included which allows users to fax directly from applications as easily as printing to a printer. Users can use an "envelope" feature that lets them combine different documents from different applications to be sent as a single fax. They can add custom headers and compose cover sheets from supplied templates or by creating their own. Employees can send their fax to multiple addresses simultaneously saving them time, and can choose to send the fax immediately or schedule it to be sent later at an off-peak dialing period to save on phone line surcharges. Incoming faxes are stored and retrieved from the server database and can be set to automatically print faxes or sent to employee desktops, either manually or, using Direct Inward Dial (DID) phone lines, automatically. In addition, the OneWorld 5000 Fax Server includes network modem capabilities for dial-out Internet access for all users on the network. Standard analog phone lines can be used with the server's internal 56K modems for high-speed access to the Internet. The OneWorld 5000 Fax Server comes standard with four V.90 56K modems and can be easily expanded as business needs grow to support additional ports, digital interfaces, serial ports or the additional capabilities of the OneWorld 5000 Suite Server product.
OneWorld 5000 Remote Access Server The OneWorld 5000 Remote Access Server integrates remote access capabilities with Internet connectivity for employees who need access to the company network and LAN-based resources from outside the office. Employees can dial-in over standard analog phone lines allowing them access to e-mail, shared files, databases and printers in addition to having direct access to the Internet. Server hardware and software, V.90 56K modems, network connectivity and management software are included. Optional ISDN or T1/E1 (available late 1998) connectivity provides the highest possible throughput. Additional analog or digital ports can be added easily via upgrade kits. Through the easy-to-use OneWorld 5000 Administrator management application, the system administrator or office manager determines who is allowed to dial in, the amount of time allowed and can also set Internet access privileges. The product includes built-in security and support for PAP, CHAP, local passwords, Novell NetWare Bindary and a packet filtering firewall for client-to-LAN and Internet Routing (LAN-to-LAN). OneWorld 5000 Suite Server For meeting all the data communications needs of a growing small business or office, the OneWorld 5000 Suite Server combines all the communications capabilities of the OneWorld 5000 Fax Server and OneWorld 5000 Remote Access Server into a single, expandable product at a very affordable price. With the shared fax capability of the Suite Server, remote users can communicate via high-quality fax with on-site users as well as customers and partners anywhere in the world. Remote users do not have to be online to receive a fax since incoming faxes are centrally stored and can be retrieved just like e-mail. Training costs are lower because the fax software is the same whether the user is on the office network or dialing in remotely. A unique feature of OneWorld fax client software is that the same fax software application can be used with the fax server and with a locally attached modem. That means that whether users are connected to the office LAN or sending faxes remotely with a modem, they have the same user interface, address book and log.
