'This is for the true information hounds who bitch that this newsgroup is
nothing but mindless end-of-the-world chatter (well, it is most of the
time, but not *all* of the time...)

Csy2k continues to be on the cutting edge of the Year 2000 issue. It's
just now beginning to make the newspapers that a significant Y2k problem
occurred at Peach Bottom nuclear plant on February 9. And this problem was
broken first in csy2k, due to the sleuthing of several denizens in this
newsgroup.

In a post on 2/19, Roger Mattson, a retired NRC engineer (and major player
in TMI) posted the following under the nom de plume "NRC Insider (retired)"
in the thread "Write NRC Re: Non-Y2k Compliant Nukes":

>Peach Bottom lost its display system during y2k testing for 5 hours
>last week.

As I was participating in the thread, this posting, buried amongst a lot of
other claptrap, caught my eye. Alas, with other commitments in hand, I
didn't have the opportunity to follow up, and promptly forgot about it.
Then, on 2/25, "cal" posted the following "cut and paste" from NRC
Chairperson Jackson remarks in a 2/11/1999 NRC transcript:

>CHAIRMAN JACKSON: It was ironic that as I prepared to inform this
> 13 international assemblage of the lack of any as yet
> 14 identified impact of Y2K on U.S. nuclear facilities, the NRC
> 15 was informed by one U.S. nuclear facility that a plant
> 16 computer had failed as a result of post-Y2K remediation
> 17 testing. One could take that as a negative, but one could
> 18 also take it as a positive since, of course, validation and
> 19 testing of Y2K remediation is a critical aspect of the
> 20 overall process.

This posting once again prompted my interest, and I went searching for the
NRC source documents. Knowing the NRC reporting system, I knew there had
to be something out there, and sure enough, I found a description of the
Peach Bottom event on the NRC's website buried within an NRC weekly report
from 2/12/1999. I promptly posted it on the euy2k.com website, and posted
my findings in csy2k. (You can look up the whole thread in Dejanews if it
has rolled off of your news server.)

Now, all of a sudden, a week later, I hear a question being asked by a
reporter at the Bennett / Dodd news conference yesterday - "what about this
Y2k problem at a nuclear facility in Pa.?" And a day later, the story is
starting to get some press coverage.

Where did it originate? In csy2k. As you can see from the trail described
above, it was a group effort. If not for that group effort, this problem
would still be buried in the bowels of a dusty NRC report. And more
importantly, it's now "in play", so to speak, and the industry will have to
provide a very public accounting of the problem after results of the
investigation are complete.

Again, this newsgroup proves that it is worth its weight in gold,
regardless of the S/N ratio. Rack up another csy2k first.

Is anyone keeping score?
