Well, if build-to-order can be considered valuable intellectual property, then that is clearly all Dell has to share with IBM. IBM, on the other hand, is a patent machine. It is possible that IBM plans to use this deal as a wedge to separate Dell from some of its corporate clientele using their own BTO IP, such as it is. For comparison, see WMT vs AMZN, now pending in the courts.
