Don't confuse a long-distance deal with high speed. The rumour was that AT&T was working a deal to replace TALK on AOL, so that AT&T would become the default telephone company on AOL and AT&T customers could pay their bills on AOL. This has nothing to do with a broadband deal. It is still quite possible that AT&T might be interested in a deal with AOL regarding their cable business with the TCI/ATHM combination, however this is total speculation at this point. A more substantive possibility is that AOL will pursue a cable deal with Time Warner, who owns RoadRunner. BTW, RoadRunner is conveniently located in Norther Virginia. Furthermore, there is still the DSL deal with Bell Atlantic and the partnership with MCI/WorldCom. AOL has a lot of irons in the fire. If Case did not want to deal with ATHM, it must mean he has something better in mind. Remember, he has 17M paying subs, 50M eyeballs, and money rolling in from ads. ATHM has 350K subs and is losing money big time... so who is in the best barganing position? :-)

P.S. I say this as an ATHM shareholder as well as an AOL shareholder. I just think ATHM is pretty far ahead of itself right now.

I pick ATHM. But like I just told Tang: Steve Case will pick what's best for AOL. I guess.
