Mohan,
I picked your comments as a jump in point but this is to everyone.

Dell has done a tremendous thing gaining access to IBMs patent technology going forward. My favorite economist: Paul Zane Pilser describes in the a very important book, The (Ecconomics of Alchemy)
that industry grows in direct proportion to the amount of UN-USED technology to which it has access. By gaining access to IBM technology patents, DELL has taken a leap into a bigger pool.

Like most gold fish, it will grow to fill that tank.

Furthermore, in giving IBM access to build to order "secrets" if there really are any, DELL allows IBM to make the investment in making IBM PC manufacturing more compatible with DELLs. Therefore, when there is a merger, acquisition or spin-off, all that extra manufacturing capability is more compatible and easier to bring into the same organization.

Seems smart to me, especially if there is more going on under the covers that we don't know about.

IMHO,
Craig
