You're right, of course.

UNLESS there was a previous passage. For example:

While I was lunching with the Smiths yesterday, dear, they were discussing whether their life together is meaningful. Somehow their conversation mixed in a cow and whether it was alive or dead, or a he or a she. I'm not sure how they got the cow in, but they finally decided how to tell if their life was meaningful. Then the famous sentence...
