FYI...3Com's website e-commerce figures are especially interesting ;-)

3Com Says Had 29% Share Of Remote Access Mkt In 1998

SANTA CLARA, Calif. (Dow Jones)--3Com Corp. (COMS) said its electronic
business-to-business transactions are responsible for 30% of its total revenue, or about $2 billion.

The company also said it had a 29% share of the remote access market, with more than 6 million ports installed worldwide, connecting an estimated 85 million people to the Internet.

The provider of information access products and network system services expects that 80% of its total revenue will be derived from business-to-business transactions by the end of 1999.

3Com expects cost savings of more than $100 million in 1999 due to an increase in productivity and a reduction of inventory associated with operational efficiencies.

3Com said its Web site averages more than one visit per week.

In a press release Wednesday, 3Com said its channel partners, end user customers, suppliers and employees will have instant, direct access to an online system to do business with 3Com by the end of 1999.

3Com attributed its projected $100 million cost savings to the implementation of a common infrastructure and the e-business tools that it provides.

One example of cost-cutting is customer support, 3Com said. With an application under the new system, it costs a minimum of 50 cents to handle each technical inquiry, down from a minimum of $10 for a technician to answer a call.

In a separate press release, 3Com said it had a remote access market shares of 29% at the end of 1998. This comprises a 31% share of the access concentrator market and a 17% share of the access server market. 3Com attributed the figures to the Dell'Oro Group's 1998 Remote Access Market Analysis, published Feb. 22.

The Dell'Oro report said 3Com was in a virtual tie with Ascend Communications Inc. (ASND) for market share leadership, with Cisco Systems Inc. (CSCO) placing third.

3Com also said it named John F. McClelland senior vice president of supply chain operations. He will report to President and Chief Operating Officer Bruce Claflin.

McClelland was global chief industrial officer at Philips International's Philips Consumer Electronics unit.
