My conscience doesn't wait to be examined; it leaps up and bludgeons me until I stuff it back down in its hole. But I had a politically correct mother, who was also Catholic. I'm not sure which was more instrumental in developing the use of guilt.

When I went to a therapist, she told me that Catholic girls were worse than Jewish men when it came to guilt. It's so ingrained in us that to violate the teachings is like violating yourself. ANd there's not much you can do about it except do as Steven said and examine it and try to overcome it when it's unreasonable.
I didn't want my children growing up with that unthinking response to dogma. May have gone too far the other way---they question everything.
