Short argument from I* yahoo thread Top > Business and Finance > Stocks > Services > Communications Services > IRID (Iridium World Comm. Ltd.) Run run run away........ by: JohnnyJuba 8801 of 8846 yo folks. I've been in mobile sat business for decades and have one thing to say: its all been overhyped. The mob sat concepts like iridium, globalstar, celestrie, teledesic were pumped up by a lot of out of work military satcom types that flogged their concepts into the commercial telecom side of life...thereby ensuring themselves tons of work and $$$$. Iridium is cut from the same conceptual blocks as spook sats,GPS,DSCS,Brilliant Pebbles,TDRSS, JTIDS, etc....i've even heard that the concept had high support from the US military because of its global coverage/civy ease of access/and maybe that's who'll pick up the pieces in the end...one rplacement satellite at a time.....that aside the IridiumKyocera Mob phone fog and mirrors show you're all writing and writhin' about probably reflects the fact that demand for the phones is tiny.... Westinghouse and Mitsubishi went through the same dance supplying phones to MSAT (SKYC)...if there was a red hot demand for phones youbechya they'de be working their MIT trained engineers triple time to debug everything before the crack of dawn..and the production line workers would be wearing piss buckets to meet the demand....but there likely ain't no demand. Training of sales staff??to sell phones????yikes... anyway....I can use my GSM Nokia anywhere there is population on earth...if I am running dogs to the Yukon or floating on the sargasso sea i can also use inmarsat or MSAT portables that ain't no bigger than a laptop and cost about 1/3 of an IR fone to use....the Iridium market hype of the wealthy international business traveller standing in the middle of a rice paddy up to his ankles in water talking on the phone is just romantic/techno hype... and the middle of the rice paddy is about the only place you can use these things...you wouldn't be able to use the phone deep inside a decent hotel anywhere ...YOU GOT TO BE OUTSIDE, at least by the window and see clear sky.....its a satelite phone and it has a hard time communicatin through anything but AIR..line of sight as they say in radio communications.....if you want to go through concrete or cinder block....buy a pcs or better still, an 800 MHz cellular...which you can get almost for free......historically INMARSAT has been making mob sat equipment and systems for years....they've only made real money on their ship board terminals.....most everything else has been a loser (for manufacturers...except possibly the current portable Inmarsat mob sat phone...but its no screaming success either....their mob aero sat system AERO I/H is also a loser... at least for another half dozen years....want to see another mob sat company that has (and is going through the same machinations as IRID)...check out SKYC; Now that's something to blubber over, a four year old start-up that had and continues to have a litany of software, hardware, sales, training, etc problems...sound familiar?..probably the same hype artists from SKYC now work for IRID....and just wait until Globalstar and ICO get going>>>some more contenders for the dirt crown of high teck hype>>>>how many international business travellers are there in the world so that we need to outlay ~$15B worth of mob sat systesm (IRID/Glbstr/ICO/INMARSAT/SKYC/AUSSAT/......etc etc?? ANyway folks...sorry for the the long dijointed spiel, but I know you're suffering....I've been on the road your all travelling and I empathize with all of you. There lots of money be made engineering these systems but there ain't much of a business case for them....
