Smart Investor, Re: "INTC threat to COMS and CSCO."

Intel's nw biz amazingly went from $0 to $2B in just two years and they seem to be successfully attacking the lower-end biz (i.e. 3COM).

However, on the high-end side (i.e. Cisco), installed base is extremely important due to compatibility/ management/ cost of ownership issues and concerns. Also, one could draw an analogy and consider whether LU's technology is better in some areas, yet Cisco remains the leader on the high-end side possibly because of the importance in which installed base plays a role in this market segment.

At the same time, Intel has a very good understanding of what it needs to achieve in order to grow the overall PC industry, yet sometimes Cisco stumbles in this regard - just look at how Cisco is handling multicasting - a technology which is needed to pump more a/v through the pipeline so more and more users "watch TV" from their PCs, so more and more users buy PCs.
