Merrill Lynch in its report following the purchse of Xylan rated it as "the best acquisition made since Tchuruck arrived".
I am not sure yet about the other one, but Xylanhas definitely good technology, and it was undervalued at the time of the purchase so definitely no problem.

Steve,

This trio of existing "Access" products (xDSL/Litespan) and the addition of edge switching and gigabit routers brings together all the right ingredients for success. The great challenge will be to have the existing Alcatel Groups work with the new independent business units with one focus and provide their customers with an integrated set of solutions.

Wide Range of Internet Technologies Now Available From Alcatel

With the new Internet Division a range of integrated Internet technologies is now available to Alcatel customers.

How do they expect to throw multiple business units together and expect to get immediate results? Not gonna happen. The success of the new aquisitions and the existing business units forming this Internet division is their ability to work together technically and how well the new all in one sales group does to market and sell products.

This is gonna be a process not an overnight success. If Alcatel would actually really stay focused on creating and maintaining brand identification for their internet division (products) and the company as a whole then they can gloss over some of the time it will take for the new division head and the central sales group as well as the business units to begin working together.

Start-up Style Management With International Reach

The Internet Division will have a common sales, marketing and customer service team with strong regional focus to ensure that well integrated end-to-end solutions are offered to carriers and service providers around the world.

They won't get Ascend's or Cisco's reputation overnight. But, it's a good start. The next few months and their ability to extend this recent momentum will be a key to success.

Regards,

Milkman
