Chris:

I've been following your discussion of WCW production on the SI thread with interest. One thought regarding whether THQ intends to sell alot of WCW games in Q2. I think the plan is to sell and probably ship alot of Thunder. I say that because all Sony Playstations sold in March, April and May will contain Thunder demo disks. Here's a snip from THQ's January 7, 1999 press release:

<<PlayStation gamers will have the opportunity to play ''WCW/NWO Thunder'' on the interactive demo packed-in to all PlayStation hardware sold in March, April and May. Additionally, a movie trailer will be available on the March demo disc of the ''Official U.S. PlayStation Magazine'' followed by an interactive demo in their May issue. >>

I highly doubt that THQ has shipped all the Thunder CDs it intends to ship if this is the case. In addition, I doubt Sony would have agreed to the promotion if THQ had to have all Thunder copies it intended to sell manufactured by 12/29/98 (or in process of manufacturing by then). The way I read the "on hand and in process" portion of the WCW agreement, THQ was required to have a master finished, and production started, by 12/29/98, but it can continue to sell games based on the completed masters (and have new games from those masters manufactured) through 6/29/99, when the license expires. It can't sell anything after 6/29/99. That's just my opinion, but I don't think the Sony marketing effort makes sense with any other interpretation, and I don't think THQ already has manufactured all the Thunder it intends to sell through 6/29/99. With the Sony promotion, there should be substantial sales in Q2, although perhaps most of this will ship at the end of Q1.
