I don't think it can. i think all we are doing is postponing the inevitable and hurting ourselves too.

Were I not so concerned by the relative lack of readiness in Asia regarding Y2K, I would hold more hope of success.

The Japanese people have tremendous amounts of money locked up in their savings accounts. But they are so frightened of being laid off, they are consuming anywhere near to the extent they used to.

Unlock some of that money, get depositors buying again, and things oould turn around within a year or two. But the big "unknown" is Asia (and Europe for that matter), is the extent of their vulnerabilities to Y2K, and how difficult it will be to perform work-arounds.
