Thinking about your post and smiling. Cajuns are different even in Louisiana, are they not?

Your point about Irish and Italian Catholicism, not so much dogma as day-to-day practice, is well taken. Brought to this country by immigrants who were oppressed in their own homeland, Catholicism as practiced by the Irish had a flavor all its own.

I think I was very fortunate indeed in my mother, who was both devoutly Catholic and a woman of great good sense. It was she who would remind me that priests and sisters are not almighty; they are fallible human beings who have chosen to dedicate their lives to God in a particular vocation. She emphasized the difference between respect and awe. It helped keep me relatively sane, even during my most religious phases.
