I would be completely shocked and even quite nervous if HP bought out NOVL. HP has not given many industry analysts a feeling that it has been going places recently. It seems to be a company that is getting lost on what it really wants to be in life (very similar to the way DEC looked like in its last years). NOVL on the other hand has a re-newed sense of purpose, excitement, and forward momentum right now. For HP to buy NOVL, I think the NOVL momentum would die out and the potential for NOVL to sell its NDS message will instantly become a lot more difficult because many of the major players like IBM and SUN etc. would now perceive NDS to be a threatening standard and try to avoid it. If I could talk to Eric, I would tell him that I hope these are just rumours and not based on reality. The merger makes no sense for NOVL. For that reason I am predicting that this is ALL RUMOURS!! And like so many other rumours, of course they are rampant. Otherwise they wouldnt be rumours. The meeting today will likely be Eric telling the troops that he is not going anywhere and that NOVL is not being bought by HP or anyone else for that matter. I personally have brought up this topic with a few high-end staff at NOVL over the past year and I can tell you that their message to me was very clear - "WE HAVE NO DESIRE TO BE BOUGHT BY ANYONE! We are doing great things lately - why would we give it all away now?" Rumours Folks! Thats what I think. For the sake of NOVL - lets hope they are just rumours. Just my opinions. Toy
