I asked Schuh about the reference, and he expected me to know what he was talking about, and didn't explain. It had something to do with the House managers. Maybe one of them, in passing, compared Monica to his daughter Marlene...Since I was already surfeited, and was busy, I didn't watch every bit of the trial. Apparently, Schuh was a bit obsessed with it.

<<He is now conspicuous by his absence.>>

He probably realized that puts her in a boat similar to Starr. He keeps calling Starr a pornographer. There is some difference though. Starr had an obligation to provide information on the merits of the case. Some say he went too far, some say not far enough. Now what obligation do the highly compensated commercialized group with Walters have? Ratings, bottom line enterprise? This wasn't exactly a PBS special, now was it.

Ish, I'm sorry that nobody here seems to have understood the "my daughter Marlene" line. Just for old time's sake:

House Manager Bryant, speaking to the Senate:

As we progressed through her deposition Monday, I felt more and more like one of the characters in the classic movie 'Witness For The Prosecution.' I was Charles Laughton. Ms. Lewinsky was Marlene Dietrich. And the President was Tyrone Power. If you are familiar with this movie, you will understand, and if you aren't, you should see the movie.

House Manager Rogan had a somewhat different characterization:

Senators who had seen the tape earlier remarked that they had been struck by her youth and vulnerability. Representative James E. Rogan of California tried to introduce her as a victim, "a bright lady whose life has forever been marked by the most powerful man on earth." Throughout his argument, he referred to her simply as Monica. And tacitly, he tried to get senators to think of her as their own daughter or niece, "that young woman," he said, "very much like a family member we might know."

Hence, "my daughter Marlene". I know, a rather subtle inference for you red meat guys. But if I were less subtle, I would arouse the wrath of the ever civil Neocon, who is troubled by bald sarcasm. When it comes from the wrong side of the aisle, anyway, I didn't notice him complaining about Vaughn's "humorous" characterization of Lewinsky as "a pathetic little pig". I'm also sorry my absence troubles you. As I've said before, I now realize that leaving this august forum devolve to "all Clinton hatred, all the time" suits my politics better than anything I could write myself.

Finally, "values." Many Republicans, cross about public support for Clinton, seem to think American values need protection from . . . Americans. As an electoral appeal, that needs work.

Granted, Clinton's silken charm makes one long for honest rancor. But Republicans who think people support him only because they have been irrationally charmed resemble Democrats who ascribed Reagan's popularity to his smile. A party in denial is in danger.

That's George Will, not normally considered a voice of the left.

Assessing blame for public fatigue with the impeachment process, Whitman said, ''I think I have to start with my own party, the Republican Party. Republicans emerged with a popular image rivaling that of Kathy Bates in Stephen King's 'Misery' -- a perception that we are mean-spirited, vindictive and obsessed.''

That's Christine Todd Whitman, also not noted as a leftist in my understanding. How could anybody ever get that impression of Republicans, I wonder? Nobody reading this august forum would ever think that.

Be happy to have GOP die if that's what it takes to defeat Clinton, the anti-Christ. (https://www.siliconinvestor.com/readmsg.aspx?msgid=6953294), quoted in full, lest JBL accuse me of "putting words in others mouths)

I could almost agree with that. I don't make predictions, but I'd say it's more likely that the Republicans will just continue to flog the "you're stupid, and we're not" line forever, doing themselves more harm than they do Clinton.

One last little press clip, on heir apparent GWB:

And the 52-year-old governor -- who has admitted to youthful indiscretions and wildness about which he has declined to elaborate, except to say that they are behind him and he is now a faithful husband and family man -- said that he had no fears that opponents would unearth skeletons from his past to derail a campaign.

"Had there been skeletons that would have destroyed a candidacy, you'd have found them in 1994 or 1998," Bush said, referring to his first and second campaigns for governor.

Well, Tommy Thompson's been through 4 campaigns here, but certain issues were never raised. In-state press tends to be a little more beholden to local interests compared to the national variety. I sort of like GWB, with his conventional interpretation of certain chapter and verse oft ignored by the good Christian inerrant Bible crowd around here. But GWB may be whistling past the graveyard on this one. He can always claim an alcoholic blackout, though.

Apologies to all for intruding again here. I wish you'd all just quit talking about me, keep all your hatred focused on Clinton the anti-Christ.

Cheers, Dan.
