Headlines 03/05 10:49 STM<STM.PA>has no comment on VLSI<VLSI.O> bid talk PARIS, March 5 (Reuters) - A spokesman for European semiconductor group STMicroelectronics NV said on Friday he had no comment on market rumours the group was planning a white-knight bid for California-based chip maker VLSI. "We have no comment to make on market rumours," the spokesman said by telephone from New York. There was speculation that STM may stage a counter bid to fend off a hostile $777 million bid by Philips Electronics NV <PHG.AS> of the Netherlands. Some STM officials are currently in the United States but the spokesman said this was part of normal business operations.
