Chuzz- I agree with your comments about Gigabuys...although I think Dell will see some incremental gains here (revs/earnings) in the next few years, and deepen and broaden customer relationships....this is going to be a highly competitive market, with many willing to cut their own throat (price) to gain a little marketshare, and a lot of folks able and willing to chase this biz...

I do hope that Dell tries to stay ahead of the pack on Gigabuys...although given that the launch was a bit long in coming (after all, the idea didn't get push until Michael Dell logged out to the Dell site last Christmas, and got frustrated)...I think, pro-actively, if this were of critical focus for Dell, it could have been launched sometime last year....The move appears to be somewhat reactive...but that's OK...one big thing I think Dell has going for it is staying power....Gigabuys can putter along making a few $$ as the bigger shakeout happens down the line....Dell will certainly still be around, many others (Egghead, buy.com, others) will certainly have trouble hangin' around...maybe, after consolidation, the biz will develop legs..The negative net margin game will not go on forever...

The possibilities with IBM are enormous going forward...I agree that this is likely the first step in a much deeper relationship...which will likely be, at the very least, (partially) the virtual company format that you have brought up....makes all the sense in the world for both companies....

As you know, last summer I predicted that either HP or IBM would be partially/totally out of the PC biz in 3 years...a lot has happened since then....a lot more to come....I like Lew Platt personally, but you could see the writing on the wall last year....

Wow. My new toy is IN!!! And ice cream update...

We ordered a Dell 450 T series (Pentium III) on Monday. They told us the 16th for delivery...and it arrived today! Hot damn that's service for ya.

BTW, I apologize to all for the delay in sending out the ice cream certificates. It has nothing to do with recent stock events. They're coming!

Jeff

P.S. Anyone who reads this, I have a few certificates left. Want some ice cream to celebrate Dell, just send me e-mail.

Paul: I am taken aback to hear that you are not excited about 'gigabuys',what's the matter withya?<g>

First of all it cost very little money for Dell to implement this operation, second of all Dell will attract a lot more customers this way and stand to gain additional business from this 'new comers'.Thridly as expected funds are not tied up in inventory.

I think if 'gigabuys' were a separate entity it could have been one of the hottest of IPOs of all time and it alone could have been worth close to a 100 bucks or more, certainly better than lot of garbage peddlers.coms, just look at their valuations.

I wouldn't be surprised if this operation generates at least 5% of the total revenue with in a year and that should have come handy if Dell had 'gigabuys' last year then we didn't have to worry about that couple of hundred million bucks shortfall in Q4.

I am also confident Dell will get additional customers (even if only a small percentage) for their core business from 'gigabuys' and thus will prove itself to be a marketing tool as well instead of being just a shopping mall of computer products. Another thing is that it could also work the other way around, a lot of people who comes just to buy computers also may turn out to be gigabuys customers.

I see 'Potential' with a capital P here, then again it is just my opinion.

Chuzz, Dell has nothing to lose and everything to gain with Gigabuys.com. They have no inventory risk and get to leverage their internet presence to increase top and bottom line growth. This is what I call a no-brainer.

:o)
