Rich, I should have said "direct" and not "B-T-O"...

Really, I grant that Michael Dell did not (even) invent direct marketing/distribution, but the genius is in applying it to an industry where few think it was a good idea (for quite a long time)..

Reminds me of something..

I love reading those lists/books of "100 most influential persons in history"...often Leonardo Di Vinci appears quite high on the list, but well below many of the inventors who have really changed the world (Watt, Edison, etc.) Why? Every list mentions that, if you look at all of history, Di Vinci was probably the most futuristic, ahead-of-his-time, quantum-thinking talented genius who ever lived..it hard to argue that there was ever a person more intelligent and capable in many different diffuse areas........there is quite a bit of evidence that he figured out, and logically explained how such things like airplane flight (and a lot of other things) hundreds of years before it was realized....problem is....at least for historical reasons, many of the authors of these "100 most influential lists" would claim that, despite his di Vinci's immense legacy, he can not appear higher on these lists because the fact is that he did not/could not implement these great ideas......that implementing/realizing ideas are historically more significant than (just, and I use that word lightly) actually coming up with them....

Keeping with the analogy......The genius of Michael Dell has been his stubborn application of a simple truth....in a lot of ways, nothing new...but when no one else is doing it....he gets way ahead on the list (and it has shown in results, stock price), because he actually applied it and saw it through....in my book, that is revolutionary enough....

Thank you for your knowledgable comments...
