Dear Brian,
I had the same questions so I wrote to Wendy Carhart at General Magic and received the following reply: I felt better after this post!

From Wendy:
"If you read the announcement made by Registry Magic yesterday, you notice a
few things. The basic premise of their announcement is that they will be
building applications on Microsoft's Web-based IVR technology. The release
states that Registry Magic is "working closely" with Microsoft. There
appears to be no agreement or partnership between the companies other than
this use of Microsoft products, which anyone can use. Registry Magic's
Virtual Operator product (which runs on Windows NT) allows up to 12 calls
to speak a name and have the call routed to the appropriate employee.
According to our research, the Operator has a limited vocabulary of 500
names, and does not understand any other type of speech. The press release
has no discussion of an actual product which will be coming out, nor does
it give any timeframe for any jointly developed products.
While a competitor in the loose sense of the word, we do not feel that
Registry Magic has been "chosen" over General Magic by Microsoft. In fact,
there appears to be no partnership between the two companies other than
Registry Magic's use of Windows products. As of November 1998, Registry
Magic had 35 full-time employees, and spent less than $1.5 million in
research and development in 1997 and 1998."
Very truly yours,

Wendy Carhart
