Product plans from AL conf call notes...

New Product Plans

Newbridge has been criticized for not keeping up to
Ascend in the speeds and feeds department. Ascend has
been shipping an ATM switch that supports a backplane
speed at least double that of the current Newbridge product
(12.5 Gbs) and supports higher-speed interfaces (OC-48).

The higher-speed backplane made Ascend's price per port
lower and thus its product more attractive to smaller
carriers and ISPs.

Nevertheless, Newbridge claims leadership in network
management, which allows large carriers to manage large
networks and consolidate multiple types of traffic. This
has made the Newbridge offering more successful with
larger carriers such as BT and MCI.

Newbridge plans to be shipping a 50 Gbs switch with OC-48
interfaces by this summer
which it believes will make it
competitive with Ascend. Furthermore, it has plans for a
320 Gbs switch by calendar Q1 2000.
