I've been spined by bullheads and the wounds always became infected. Never have stepped on one though. One morning when we first moved here I was wearing rubber boots when I went to get the paper. In the dark I stepped on a twig from a wild plum that was in the yard. It went through the boot and into my foot. Told my wife to leave my boot alone and get some pliers to pull the twig out. Two hours later the plums were cut down and burned.

That's a problem with nylon, the stuff looks ok right up until the time it snaps. I watched a show about the boats in the America's Cup races. I forget how many miles of rope they go through but it was a bunch.
