One other side of this deal (IBM/DELL) that has not been mentioned yet, as far as I know.

There was speculation a few weeks ago on this thread that IBM may make a bid for Gateway as a way of quickly obtaining a "direct" manufacturing capability. With this new alliance I see an IBM bid for Gateway as a dim possibility.

Since neither Compaq nor HP have the capital to purchase Gateway, and are pre-occupied with other financial dealings (Digital merger, splitting into two companies,...)I see NO ONE having a chance of even coming close to the MAGNITUDE of DELL's direct capability. Some may do it on a small scale (IDOT.COM) with a lower quality, but not like DELL.

Grant, IMO, the article hit the nail on the head. One thing that bothers me, given the value of this agreement, is that Gerstner (Sp?) and Michael Dell were not present at the announcement. I can't remember when such a big deal was announced and the President/CEO of both firms weren't present to say a few words. Something just doesn't seem right. It's like waiting for the other shoe to drop.

>>"Frankly, I see what IBM is getting, but I don't see what Dell is getting out of the deal," says BancBoston Robertson Stephens' Dan Niles.<<

I thought that Niles was dumped in the San Francisco Bay last week by Dell. How did he get away?? That asshole must think that Michael Dell is f#$*ing stupid.
