Mike --- Think of the alliance as NATO with NN and Siemens the primary members. Because they decide to join together to support each other's cause doesn't mean they won't keep their own arsenals and troops should they be needed. Each country maintains itself as a separate entity, totally self-sustaining, and at the same time brings to the organization anything they've decided will help their joint effort. There may be times when one country contributes something the other country doesn't have and doesn't want to develop. In that case, they're free to use their resources in another way. At other times one country may contribute something that's so key to both members' survival, the other country will continue to develop it on its own. Is NATO in trouble because each country develops parallel strengths? Absolutely not. In our hypothetical NATO, let's say one country controls 75% of all the border crossings in Europe and Asia and the other controls 75% of the world's gasoline and so they decide to trade free passage across borders in exchange for gasoline. The agreement runs smoothly until one day the country with all the gasoline is almost taken over by a third country, one that controls 85% of the border crossings in North and South America. Imagine what would happen to the country controlling Europe and Asia if they had succeeded and their gasoline supply were cut off? Witching rods would appear overnight. Taking the metaphor one step further, which country has the more valuable commodity? Given that everyone behind every one of those borders also needs the gasoline, the country who controls it will find a market even if the borders take a little more finessing to cross. Right now Siemens is a valuable sales channel and Newbridge has ATM switches that Siemens needs and doesn't have the time to develop. The alliance is evolving and will continue to evolve and as long as each company benefits, I believe it'll survive. John Donne had it right, "No man is an island. . ." Night --- Pat
