Thanks Sig-excellent post.-I'm of the opinion both the "service business" and "IBM folding their PC business" are in the future.AS you know my belief is that NO company on the face of this planet is equipped to stop DELL in its quest for global command of their area of business.wbm

Re: IBM technology and exotic display panels which may even replace the common monitor...

A bit OT but maybe relevant;

FWIW--first of all, I have an IBM 16 inch (which is about the size of a CRT 18") LCD monitor and it's fantastic. Most freestanding LCD's aren't any good because the pixel size is not good enough yet. This one is. Originally retailed $4,000, I bought it for $1400, and the prices are rapidly coming down...they will definitely replace, they're space savers, and a thousand times easier on the eyes. IBm deserves its "unstained" rep, the monitor is unbeatable, and BTW, their newer monitors are even better.

Secondly, I was at a huge trade show at Javitz center in NYC last week, sponsored by ZDnet, for the financial community. (I was there sa a journalist, not a pretend hedge fund manager!) Nothing but LCDs there on display. I know that's the high end market and specialized now but I think it will eventually penetrate across the whole market. You could see the future there. Again, they were gorgeous, good enough to eat. Technology rapidly evolving. IBM is a major player along w/ some others such as Eizo (I didn't think they were as good).

It's just one aspect of computer biz and not central, and I know anything over 15 inch LCD gets more expensive currently because of the size of the crystal "sheet" they buy, they can cut 4 15" panels out of it and only 2 of any bigger size, but I'm sure they'll figure a way arond that soon
