Todd, As I understand it, your stocks can be used, by others, on their margin accounts. The individual could barrow against their margin and short the stock through Canadian accounts. Agreed the shorter's usually have to have at least a $100,000.00 margin in order to do this. The MM's barrow our shares which are not held by us and loan them to the shorter. The MM than makes the fee for the share purchase. If we hold the shares ourselves than they can not be used by anyone else. What happens is the share price can be depressed by the number of short plays being made against the stock and the pressure by MM's if they want to push it down to buy prior to a potential run-up.
The negative side to requesting your shares being sent to you is that you may not be able to sell them instantly, when you want to on a run-up either. Many brokers won't sell a share unless it is in their possession.
