Index performance for the week ending March 5

MicroCap stocks fizzled this week while the Dow surged to a new record
high. The Dow had been down 30.70 points for the week after Wednesday's
close, but an amazing two-day gain of 460.20 points (4.96%) on
Thursday/Friday sent the Dow to a new closing high of 9736.08. MicroCap
stocks, on the other hand, have been down for the last four weeks in a
row, after posting nice gains during the first five weeks of 1999. The
MicroCap50 lost 3.37% last week. The Russell 2000 index of smallcap
stocks managed to gain some ground last week (1.47%), and the Nasdaq
Composite gained as well (2.15%).

The MicroCap50 fell 20.86 points (-3.37%) last week to close at 598.46.
The index is up 4.42% so far in 1999 and is up 49.51% from its October 8
low of 400.29.

The Russell 2000, a smallcap stock index, gained 5.75 points (1.47%) last
week to close at 398.01. The index is down 5.68% in 1999 and is down
8.93% since January 1, 1998.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average jumped 429.50 points last week (4.62%)
to close at 9736.08 - a new record high. The previous high of 9643.32 was
set on January 8, which was also a Friday, as the Dow gained 461.89
points (5.03%) that week. The Dow is up 6.04% so far in 1999.
