To my knowledge, none of the online brokers will do it, so one will need to actually speak to a trader, god forbid.

Actually, in my Waterhouse on-line account, I was able to hold a simultaneous, balanced short and long position on the same stock. However, this was probably due to yet another bug with Web-broker (aka Web-broken). Once, about 18 months ago, I actually got transferred to someone else's account on Web-broker. I put in a trade in that account, wrote down the confirmation number, then called the Waterhouse technical assistance to inform them of the event.

I mainly use an AB Watley Nasdaq level-2 system now, and they don't seem to offer an inventory of stocks to short.
