I'm sure that you're right that there are people being left along the wayside from doing too much speculating, too much daytrading. I lost $30,000 doing that, and it wasn't until I disciplined myself to stop that I got out of the hole and am now up about $80,000 (of course, making some good investments helps, too--just buying and holding isn't the answer if what you're holding is crap...).

I'm sure that there are some folks who are learning some painful lessons, and some who will never return to on-line investing. However, there is clear evidence that their numbers are more than being made up by new people who are flocking to on-line brokers to make their investments. Why do you think Merrill-Lynch is moving in this direction (especially after publicly deriding it)? They have no choice. This is the wave of the future, and while you might be able to make some money short-term, I sure wouldn't want to be short and get caught in an updraft like the one we saw in January.
