Robert, think of open position and close position rather than shorting, going long, covering, etc. A short sale is merely uses a sell to open the position, and a buy to close position. The mechanics of the trade are identical, with the exception that you must comply with the uptick rule to sell to open.

BTW, any trade can be executed at the bid or the ask. The difference is that no one is required to sell to you if you're on the offer, or buy from you if you're on the bid. When you sell at the bid, somebody somewhere bought those shares, and vice versa.
