Novell is back and booming, report says

NEW YORK (CBS.MW) -- Novell has managed to crawl back from the dead under the leadership of Silicon Valley whiz Eric Schmidt, Barron's reported.

Sales of its netware products, which help computers talk to each other, are booming, helped by rival Microsoft's miscues in development of its corporate networking products.

"We are not only not dead, we are really excited about this," Schmidt told Barron's.

Last month Novell reported a sixth quarter of improved results, as profits doubled and revenues rose 13 percent.

Novell is slated to announce more details of its latest directory product Monday. Directory products help managers keep track of all the pieces of equipment and users on corporate networks.

Trading at 43 times expected earnings, the stock (NOVL) may look pricey, until it's compared with Internet stocks or even Microsoft (NOVL), which is about 60 times expected earnings, the magazine reported. Shares rose 1/16 to close at 20 1/8 Friday.
