I had problems of that type -- not sure if it was exactly like yours -- when I was using the screen-saver feature in Win95. Now I don't use it and everything's fine.

Re: Monitor going into 'permanent' power saving mode.

I had that same problem when I first installed my newest system.

I would be working in Word, or Netscape, and the monitor would suddenly go black. (Viewsonic PS790).

The only thing I could do was restart the system. Disabling power saving mode and updating the video driver fixed the problem for good.
