Is it too late to jump on the AOL bandwagon?

Savvy management

If a well-positioned company has lousy leadership, it won't remain well-positioned for long. But can you really assess management from afar? To a large extent, yes. Ask these questions: Does management aggressively take advantage of new opportunities? Does it leverage its market position? Deliver on promises? Keep competitors at bay? Make good strategic decisions?

For years, CEO Stephen M. Case of AOL was chastised for spending a fortune on marketing (was there anyplace you couldn't find an AOL diskette?) and ignoring profitability. With hindsight, it's clear the critics were shortsighted and Case was correct. When you follow a company, keep a mental scorecard of its key strategic initiatives. You want to own shares of those that get most of the big calls right.
